Brackets play a crucial role in orthodontic treatment primarily as anchors for orthodontic wires. They are typically bonded to the teeth and serve as a point of attachment for the wire that helps to move the teeth into the desired position. The brackets work in conjunction with the archwire; as the wire is adjusted, it applies gentle pressure to the brackets, guiding the movement of the teeth over time. This systematic approach helps achieve proper alignment and bite correction in patients undergoing orthodontic procedures.

The other choices delineate roles that are distinctly separate from what brackets do. Cleaning teeth is part of oral hygiene practices but is not related to orthodontic brackets. Replacing missing teeth falls under restorative dentistry, which involves implants or prosthetics, not orthodontic devices. Supporting dentures is related to removable prosthodontics and not applicable in the context of braces and orthodontics.
